The Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks an outstanding individual for a full-time tenure-track position in materials science with emphasis on the fabrication of micro and nanoscale materials and devices. Especially encouraged are applicants with interest in sustainable energy. The opening is at the Assistant Professor level but candidates with strong records will be considered for appointment at a higher level.
Required attributes include a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, a commitment to teaching excellence and innovation, and a strong potential to develop an externally funded research program. The department (http://engineering.villanova.edu/me) has twenty three faculty with 280 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students, and offers BS, MS and PhD degrees; the Ph.D. degree is offered through the College. The department has established a strong infrastructure (facilities and personnel) for research on the fabrication, processing, characterization, and computational modeling of advanced materials. The facilities and laboratories include the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) (Ultrahigh temperature and vacuum furnaces, CVD facility, Thin-film deposition facility, Plasma-etching and ion-milling machines, Metallurgical sample preparation and characterization facilities, Mechanical testing facilities), the High Resolution Microscopy laboratory (HRML) (Hitachi S-4800 SEM with EDS and EBSD, Agilent 5500 AFM, Agilent G200 Nanomechanical Characterization System (Nano Indenter)), and the Computational Simulation Laboratory. The department faculty and students also have ready and easy access to state-of-the-art characterization instrumentation (including the Hitachi H-7600 TEM with EDS) in the Science departments on campus.
